“Sicko” Movie Review
The movie ‘Sicko’ is about all of the different types of health systems in the world. The movie is mostly referring to the British system, the system in France, the American system and the Canadian system.
I feel like the U.S. system is not as fair as the other systems that they talk about in this documentary. In this documentary Michael Moore is saying that the U.S health care system is ranked 37 out of 191 by the World Organization. Almost fifty million Americans are uninsured while the rest, who are covered, are often victims of insurance company fraud and red tape. The interviews are conducted with people that they had adequate coverage but they were denied care.
In Canada the director describes a man named ‘Tommy Douglas’, who was voted the ‘Greatest Canadian’ in 2004 for his contributions to the Canadian health system. Moore shows that public services like police, fire services, the United States Postal Service, public education and community libraries have not led to communism in the United States. The origins of the Health Maintenance Organization Act of 1973 are presented using a taped conversation between John Ehrlichman and President Richard Nixon on February 17th 1971. Ehrlichman is heard telling Nixon that “the less care that they give, the more they make”.
In the United Kingdom, which people say that is a country whose National Health Service is a comprehensive publicly funded health care system. When Moore interviews patients and inquires about in-hospital expenses, he is told that there are no out pocket payments. When the director visits the UK pharmacy he finds out that pharmaceuticals are free of charge for anyone under the age of 16 and over the age of 60, and subsidized for everyone else. They usual charge about $10 per item.
In France, the director visits a hospital and interviews the head of obstetrics gynaecology and a group of American expatriates. Moore rode with the ‘SOS Medicins’, who are a 24-hour French medical service that provides house calls by physicians. While in France the director discovers that the French Government provides many social services, such as health care, public education (including universities), vacation and a day care for $1 an hour, also neonatal support that includes cooking, cleaning, and laundry services for new mothers.
I really enjoyed this documentary, it made me realize how some of the health care systems aren’t as far as the others. I am glad to live in Canada where out health care system is far and not as complicated as others.
